Year of the Monkey Course Structure

Delivered over four terms, the Year of the Monkey offers an intensive, flexible route for training actors. The first two terms of training are primarily delivered during evenings and weekends for around 22.5 hours per week. Term 3 is an intensive rep rehearsal process in preparation for performance in Term 4, with a season of work at the Camden Fringe which showcases the actors in training to a public audience, supported by a team of award winning directors and creatives. These terms operate on a 30-40 hour working week, incorporating rehearsals alongside normal training classes, and are underpinned by further support and development.

Students begin with a solid grounding in actor training with a regular schedule of classes in:

  • Voice

  • Decroux Mime
  • African Dance
  • Neutral Mask
  • Physical Theatre
  • Actor’s Toolkit

Classes continue in the second term with:

The company of actors return following a brief break to commence rehearsals in repertory, in preparation for their run at the Camden Fringe festival.
The Camden Fringe is the largest arts festival in London and Fourth Monkey is proud to boast an impressive reputation at the Fringe. The Fourth Monkey actor is very much in the spotlight when participating at the Fringe, allowing a closing public showcase of the actors’ work prior to completing their training.

Throughout the final term, students take part in rehearsals and tech runs preparing them for a two week repertory season where they will appear in two performances.

What our students say

“As an actor, I can think of no better opportunity and learning curve than the Year of the Monkey. It’s exciting, creative and an amazing challenge. It is the course to be on.”

James Bryant, Year of the Monkey Alumnus

“The Year of the Monkey is unique; a fundamental year in any young actor’s career. It offers immediate performance experience on the professional stage, combined with immersive, thorough and liberating training.”

Kerrie Mailey, Casting Director

“The Year of the Monkey is revolutionary and unique. Never before have I had the opportunity to do as many things within the same year, to help my journey towards becoming a professional actor. A great blend; part foundation course and part rep theatre company, helped to solidify my love for the art and the need I have to take it further. The added support and tutoring I received only added to this amazing experience.”

Sam Adamson, Year of the Monkey and Two Year Rep Alumnus

We offer free monthly Taster Workshops to provide potential applicants with the opportunity to try our style of training and to work out whether drama school might be a good fit for them.

Led by Artistic Director Steve Green, the workshops are an introduction to the Fourth Monkey way of working and include two main elements: a Complicté-based element on Ensemble and a Character Building element, with an emphasis on tension states, archetypes and building characters through physicality. There will also be opportunity to chat with Steve about our training and future opportunities.
