Steven Green

Steve is the Artistic Director of Fourth Monkey theatre company. After graduating in 1994 he went on to work as an actor and director whilst also actively working as a practitioner with actors in training as well as a number of years working in casting and as a theatre agent. His diverse range of experiences within the industry, having taught and directed students at a number of the leading drama schools and institutions in the UK, has enabled him an insight in to the needs and requirements of the young or developing actor. A need that reaches beyond that of the often formulaic process of formal training in the UK, that once complete leaves the actor, through no fault of their own hoping for an agent to pick them up and guide them through their career. This is rarely the reality and in the modern marketplace of a saturated industry a more expansive and innovative approach is required to provide the actor with the skills required to survive and flourish within the industry...the simple experience of working on a professional stage the most logical and progressive offering and one that Fourth Monkey passionately believes in and offers their actors whilst in the process of training.

The vision for Fourth Monkey has been born out of years of working with and training actors at the formative stages of their careers and witnessing new professionals, no matter their age or life experience, often struggle for opportunities and acceptance within the industry. Steve's vision for Fourth Monkey is to harness the energy and enthusiasm of creative talent entering the industry by offering them the platform to express their talents collaboratively. Steve believes wholeheartedly in the power of the ensemble. Fourth Monkey do not look to develop egos or stars, but a company of actors each as able and as regarded as the last.

Steve and Fourth Monkey are proud to be at the forefront of a change in the landscape of actor training in the UK and he looks to continue to push the boundaries with both his work as a director and with his pursuit of developing and providing genuine opportunity for young actors.

His directorial credits include original devised pieces as well as interpretations of other works, all regardless, delivered with a signature style that is often uncompromising and always intended to push convention and challenge both the audience and the actor.

He references his theatrical influences as Lecoq, Artuad, John Wright and the wonderful Simon McBurney amongst others and aims to deliver a work, although not in their own individual style, influenced by and with flavours of them. He looks to define the visceral ensemble work of Fourth Monkey as it continues to place itself and its innovative and uncompromising work on the british theatre map.
